A lovely antique handstitched patchwork quilt top found in Cumbria. This is a well constructed quilt, the stitcher has used tiny small six sided shapes, some of the papers are still present. all patches measure only 1 1/4" x 1 3/8", made from many coloured printed, woven and plain 19th century dress silks & cottons including chintz. The quilt is graphic in design with lots of visual impact, very pleasing to look at.
This lovely patchwork quilt top has one silk patch showing a sweet verse printed on cream silk : see images two and five, click on any image to enlarge.
'Forget-Me-Not : I have culled a litttle flower.
My messenger to be
Let it whisper in thine ear.
All I would say to thee.'
Apart from a couple of stained silk blue pieces, there are no more imperfections than one would expect from a textile of this period. Last image shows the reverse on the right side of the image. This is a pretty & characterful period piece, no fade, repairs, rips or tears. Overall in excellent condition for lining/mounting to use for a bedcover or hanging.
